The world recently lost a bright light and hero fo The world recently lost a bright light and hero for elephants and conservation. Dr. Iain Douglas Hamilton dedicated his life to the protection of African elephants and the fight against poaching.

I had the privilege to work with Iain on various projects across three decades. We teamed up in his Cessna 180 plane for my first Nat Geo story (vimy flight across Africa) and many times after to tell stories about the secret world of elephants and the lands they roam - from seasonal water holes to the shoulders of 17,000 ft Mt. Kenya.

With the use of GPS collars, and later books and films - Iain helped us all learn some of the mysteries of elephants to better understand how we can live with them.

Iain - Thanks for being a gigantic voice for our gentle giants. You were an inspirational giant for me and the 🌎. My heartfelt condolences to your extraordinary family and team that are carrying on your work and legacy at @savetheelephants.

I will look for you in the sky Iain.

Speaking of Water: in the West we all need to ask Speaking of Water: in the West we all need to ask for less. Simple.
I’m speaking tomorrow in Delta CO with @coloradocanyons about the importance of the Colorado River, public lands, native voices, storytelling and our challenges (and some successes) with it all.

The world is a noisy place, and growing louder. In The world is a noisy place, and growing louder. In an effort to escape some noise and hug the quiet, I did a book a few years back called Seeing Silence.
It includes my imagery across seven continents spanning over two decades, that focus on natural sounds away from our mechanized soundscapes.
Most of the most magical moments I describe in the essays, can not be bought online or in a store. They are rare, auditory moments that took patience and persistence — and all happened, ironically, as I was trying to document with the visual tools of the eye.

For those interested in the limited edition, I have a few copies left and prefer they get seen and pondered. From now until Giving Tuesday, signed and unsigned editions are $75 OFF.

The greatest environmental disaster you’ve never h The greatest environmental disaster you’ve never heard of.
To the water managers on the Colorado River who are struggling to work together and acknowledge a changing watershed, this is a friendly reminder of what climate change (and over allocation and mismanagement of a river) looks like downstream. We all need to ask for less — if we want to keep any part of this American Nile alive — because these scenes are moving upstream to the top of the watershed where we are all praying for snow… once again.

The Colorado River Delta was the largest desert estuary in North America. It dried up in my lifetime. It feels like I’ve spent a lifetime talking about it and documenting it too.
Yet, it continues to be forgotten, unnoticed, and run dry.

Perhaps we can give some gratitude to our rivers, including the big ol’ Coloradie this Holliday. Find ways to support your local watershed.

For those interested, I have a new book coming out this winter about my time standing up for the river. Check my bio for pre-order options on “Witness to Water”.
