Exciting News! My book "Seeing Silence" is coming out in a limited edition, large format version. This 12x12 edition is the same as the original, but bigger with new imagery, a signed print and a beautiful clamshell case. It shares my stories from all seven continents about the magic and fragility of silence and natural sounds — from the whisper of bat wings to the rumble of elephants that we can’t hear.

This 20-year span of my work — both imagery and words — for the likes of @natgeo @smithsonianmagazine @nature_org and so many more is the collection I am most proud of. I hope it transports you to many rare places where natural sounds and silence still live and the human cacophony of our mechanical world has not entirely changed the soundscape or landscape.

I’ve been lucky to see and document elephants around the world — from those in the wild to those in captivity and others being relocated for survival or rescued in orphanages. Elephants are remarkable species that are as spirited, sophisticated and individualized as humans. Thanks to all those working to ensure they survive the challenges of today’s world — from poaching to habitat loss and more — @r.e.s.c.u.e @savetheelephants @africanparksnetwork and so many more.

Lions are communicative creatures, and the bellowing roar of a male often heard after sunset can carry as far as five miles away (eight km) — the loudest roar of all big cats at 114 decibels. These majestic cats may be intimidating to their prey, but they are also threatened: African lions have disappeared from 94% of their historic range and are listed as vulnerable to extinction. Let's celebrate these important apex predators on this World Lion Day 🦁

Kenyan drought: in the north, rains have been scarce for two years leaving rivers dry, wildlife challenged and songs of prayer. Yesterday those prayers were answered - briefly. .

Rain showers dampened the landscape bringing the Ewaso Nyiro back to life … for now. It was a sight to see bringing some to tears.

Mantas in Motion: Some 540 kilometers south of Baja California is the Revillagigedo archipelago, a biosphere reserve known as the “Galapagos of Mexico.” These volcanic islands are home to one of the largest groups of sharks in manta ways in the world, including these gentle giants I had the privilege to swim with (plus our surprise dolphin friend).

The largest rays in the world, mantas are majestic, intelligent, and highly threatened due to a low reproduction rate and overfishing for their meat and gill plates.

Six nautical miles around the islands have been protected since 1994, creating a natural, vibrant habitat for an abundance of species to thrive.

Migration: On the plains of Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti, wildebeest and zebras have shadowed the rains and the grasses that follow for thousands of years. They make up what is known as the largest migration of terrestrial mammals on Earth and one of the "Seven Wonders of the Natural World."

It was amazing to see and hear this mass movement of some two million wild animals — and the predators that follow — recently in Kenya.

Water Pressure: The Colorado River basin continues to get thirstier, forcing adaptation whether we like it or not. The "megadrought" is forcing the seven states along this key lifeline to make drastic cuts in an effort to conserve four million acre-feet of water for next year, about one-third of the river's annual flow.

Most of those steep cuts will need to come from agriculture and lower basin states, which use more water than they are allocated. I’ve documented the Colorado source-to-sea over the course of a decade, and I am still amazed that we ran the river dry (it no longer reaches the sea) and how few realize how precious and scarce this lifeline is.

Silence is a natural resource we don't often think about because it is an absence, rather than a presence. But most of the places we think of as "quiet" are actually filled with an abundance of natural sounds, from canyon wrens whistling in the Grand Canyon to orca whales calling underwater in the quiet depths of an Arctic sea. As humanity grows louder, these pockets of silence and natural sounds are becoming rarer.

I'm thrilled to share that my book on this subject, Seeing Silence, will soon be available in a large-format special edition, complete with a signed print by yours truly. Sign up to be notified about the release of the Seeing Silence deluxe version at the link in my bio.

Time, the brevity of it and life become quickly evident when filming (with permission) the funeral pyres on the banks of India's Ganges River in Varanasi.

I spent a week obtaining permission to film with @mountainworld for @natgeo and was amazed by the humanity, beauty and intensity woven through this tradition to take the final step in life. From our documentary film #Holy(un)HolyRiver about the Ganges River - and its water qualities and contamination.

Fire in the Sky: Happy belated 4th to all - hopefully friends and controlled fireworks were all you saw. A few years ago, my fireworks were a natural wildfire that nearly wiped out my town forcing our community to evacuate. Thankfully, this slurry bomber I photographed from my front door helped save our mountain town. It was a huge reminder how changing weather patterns everywhere are creating epic challenges far and wide with fire, drought, flooding, water, air and more. (Drones replaced actual fireworks this year).

As we reflect, I hope we remember native voices that worked with Mother Nature — (like using controlled fires to keep systems in balance) and still hold and share amazing knowledge how we can work better with nature — not independent from it. #fire #fireworks #nature 📷 #sonyalpha #petemcbride
