River Talk: I'm excited to speak about water issues and solutions this Saturday at the @mountainfilm "Innovating Our Way Out of a Water Crisis" speaker series. This subject is close to my heart and also the topic of my new book coming out in the near future. Come by if you're in Telluride and hear from myself and other people passionate about water on what we can do about the troubles facing our loved and litigated lifeline, the Colorado River.

Into the maze of a frozen river near the top of the world.

Wishing everyone on Mount Everest a safe passage this climbing season especially the Sherpa that often carry the heaviest loads.

From a story I did years ago, documenting the Khumbu Fall ice doctors, the Sherpa who build a route, so others can climb.

The songs of polar night — and their singers. Orcas have been recorded making up to 24 different sounds, from whistles and echolocation clicks to pops and more. But what is even amazing is that each orca pod or family makes totally unique sounds amongst themselves. I was lucky to have the opportunity to free dive in the Arctic waters of Norway and witness, but also hear, the remarkable underwater communications amongst orca pods as they fed upon schools of herring, as well as the humpbacks who followed to take advantage of the orcas’ hard work.

Thanks for following along with my takeover of the @unbiodiversity account this week. Feel free to find more stories and adventures @pedromcbride.

The world of wildlife is constantly being turned upside down. The UN estimates that approximately
one million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction. Due to the challenges of
habitat loss, poaching, noise, human conflict, climate change and more we have to resort to drastic
measures like assisted migration in some regions to help.
@africanparksnetwork has successfully done this in Malawi several times, tranquilizing and
transporting over 750 elephants safely from one park to another to ensure their survival. I had the
privilege to document the logistical orchestra involved in such an undertaking.

In the western U.S., water is life. It is also becoming more precious. Despite one big winter, the West is still reeling from the worst drought in 1,200 years which is parching its main lifeline, the Colorado River that supplies water to 40 million Americans and helps grow the country’s salad bowl. Colorado River farmlands in the Imperial and Yuma valleys grow over 95% of America’s winter vegetables but also foliage crops like alfalfa hay that is exported abroad. Big agriculture uses up to 80% of the river and up to 70% of that is exported for dairy and beef production overseas.

Where does your food come from?
That baby spinach salad and roasted cauliflower in January most likely came from the Colorado River.

There is nothing like seeing wildlife in their natural habitat. Before this mother lion crashed through the water looking for a meal, an orchestra of lesser-known animals were very busy. A herd of gazelle leapt and ran off. A pack of African wild dogs, working with strategic, silent teamwork, had attacked. Running at over 40 mph they took down a young gazelle. Then the rarely-seen caracal, a wild cat recognizable by its tufted ears, lurked in the shadows. Not long after, a leopard looked in. A greater kudu carefully wandered past just before the final act in this symphony of wild wonders — the lion came splashing in looking for leftovers followed by a pack of cackling hyenas. The cycle of life.

I once followed British adventurer Ed Stafford down a Peruvian stretch of the Amazon River. Stafford, a former British Army captain, was traveling the entire length of the largest river on Earth — on foot. Floating, paddling and even swimming had already been done; walking it—through flooded forests, Indigenous villages and logged hectares—had not.

For two weeks, we trudged through dense brush and murky waters, quickly realizing that this jungle adventure was bringing us face to face with all our childhood nightmares about swamps and the creatures that crawl there. We constantly kept our eyes on the water for caimans — part of the alligator family — and piranhas. But this region is also home to some less-scary wildlife: curious tapirs, clingy woolly monkeys, sleepy sloths, poised squirrel monkeys. Whether deep in the jungle or closer to civilization, the silence of the wild was brimming with natural chirps, squeals, whistles and more.

Himalaya Highway: Following the Ganges River as she drains the highest peaks on the planet.

While the river has many challenges, I was always amazed how so many revere the river like a god - not just on #earthday - but everyday.

I followed this remarkable waterway from 18,000 feet atop the Gangotri Glacier downstream 1500 miles to the sea for @natgeo. We took water samples the entire way measuring river health and pollutants for our film #holyunholyriver with @mountainworld @davidcmorton. The results were both scary and inspiring.

The Commute and The Office:

I do a lot of work in remote places — often on foot. But sometimes I need the bird’s eye view and drones aren’t always allowed or the logistics of getting to the spot is too far or complicated.
So I often team up with amazing single-engine pilots that let me hang out the window as the steady hum of the engine, the wind and our radio calls serve as background. For years I’ve flown with my father but I’ve also teamed up with pilots like Will — who has generously shared his aerial Cessna perch with me for over a decade documenting water. Will is a veteran, an engineer and a gem — and also a great pilot. Thanks Will for our recent flight and many more aviators over the years.
