Hooray for the Little Things: The Little Colorado River is a tributary inside the Grand Canyon which naturally flows turquoise due to the calcium carbonate rich waters. This marvel has been a regular target for developments, from gondolas to dams, to turn its beauty into cash. The latest have been three dam proposals inside this remote canyon considered to be a spiritual center by the Navajo and Hopi tribes (and others). But today, the developer cancelled two of the proposals. One remains — and an uphill paddle to prevent it — but right now we have some good news to celebrate for this little yet powerful river. Dust on Snow: My latest work for @natgeo looks at how snowfields across the Rockies have become more colorful lately as dust storms shower them. The tea-colored snow doesn’t just mar scenic views, but acts like a blanket on the snowpack, absorbing heat from the sun and melting the snow more quickly and up to six weeks earlier.

Forty million people in the Colorado River Basin rely on sustained snowpack for drinking water and to irrigate 5.5 million acres of agricultural land. The American Southwest is enduring the twenty-second year of the worst drought in about 500 years. The intense and widespread dry spell defies historical records and leaves meteorologists and water managers at a loss for how to predict the future. Scientists argue that the West is now experiencing “aridification”—a permanent transition to an “increasingly water scarce environment.” To see the article, check the link in my bio.

$Modern Migration: A look back at the extraordinary journey 520 elephants made from two parks in Malawi — to a new, safer habitat in 2017. Wildlife corridors have become ever-more fractured by roads and developments making travels far more complicated for roaming animals like elephants who constantly face human-wildlife conflicts and poaching threats. Over the course of a year ending in 2017, I got to witness a few of the 520 elephants and 2,000 other animals relocated from Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in northern Malawi. @africanparksnetwork provided new protected habitat, eased wildlife population pressures and helped ignite a new tourist economy — and not a single animal was lost or harmed. It was one of the most remarkable, logistical ballets I’ve ever seen. The Confluence: Two of the American Southwest’s greatest rivers, the Green and the Colorado, merge below the rims inside Canyonlands National Park. The view is jaw dropping. So is the current low water level. Both rivers this summer are flowing at their all time record lows in recorded history. Many call it a “Mega Drought." Others are saying this is the ‘acidification' of the West — everything is getting hotter and dryer on record levels.

To adapt, we all need to come together and pay attention to this most valuable finite resource — water — to conserve it and the habitats where it flows. Part of that includes investing in companies that understand and embrace this challenge.
