In my time in the Grand Canyon, I’ve often heard visitors ask while looking at artifacts, ancient tools or buildings, “Where did all these people go?”

I often respond, right here. There are 11 Native American tribal communities that live in and around the Grand Canyon and the land remains revered and sacred to them, like it has for centuries. It is wonderful to know this landscape and others will remain natural and cultural sites for generations to come. Protections for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante Monuments were restored last Friday. I’ve had the privilege to work with and witness the efforts of many remarkable native leaders and others who helped make this a reality. Thanks to those who speak up for the wild places that don’t have voices at the table, including @timmydp with @grandcanyontrust who snapped this unique image of Bears Ears. Running a river running dry: Last month my friend @lennecefer and I pack-rafted the Yampa river at record low water for @NatGeo. Our goal was to travel the last 50 miles of the river through Dinosaur National Monument, to see how even a wild river inside a national park was struggling to stay wet. The trip would foreshadow what might be to come for many western rivers as the climate changes. With only a few small dams and diversions, the 250-mile-long Yampa is one of just a few free-flowing rivers in the United States and the longest in Colorado. The journey was eye-opening, even for me who has spent years looking at water shortage. But it was also hopeful as I learned how creative collaboration can keep a river alive — barely. After studying the world for years as a photographer & filmmaker, I've realized that the least appreciated and often hardest-to-document marvels are not the breathtaking vistas I chase with my camera but the blanket of calm that surrounds them — the choir of croaking frogs, the applause of rain on rock, the notes of wings and wind.

Remembrance: A penpal story-- twenty Years ago: I was preparing to leave for Tripoli, Libya for an assignment for @natgeo to take a camel train across the Libyan desert on a salt trading route. My bags and cameras were packed. I had even purchased a camel.
But when I awoke, the world had changed by a horrific act of evil that haunts so many today. For obvious reasons, my assignment was cancelled. As I sat glued to the T.V., horrified and confused by the tragedy unfolding, paralyzed with a swirl of emotions, my email beeped. Subject: To Mr. Peter. From friend Hamoudi. It read, “Mr. Peter, please know I am very sorry for tragedy. This is not my religion. My prayers to you, New York, the world.” Hamoudi is a bedouin who lives near Petra in Jordan and he worked as my translator on a story I had done just months earlier. After 9/11 occurred, he rode his camel all day, from his village through Petra to the nearest town, found a college student who could write in English and shared that message. I'll never forget it. It will always be a reminder that there is amazing goodness and good people in the world, no matter their home or background. So when I think of this day, I remember the horror but also the remarkable bravery and humanity that spread throughout not just the United States, but the world. I was lucky to experience the wild soul of Marc André Leclerc in “The Alpinist,” the newest feature documentary from my friends at @senderfilms, at an early screening last night. This incredibly powerful and moving film begins its U.S. theatrical run this weekend — international release coming soon. “As the sport of climbing turns from a niche pursuit to mainstream media event, Marc-André Leclerc climbs alone, far from the limelight. With no cameras, no rope, and no margin for error, Marc-André’s approach is the essence of solo adventure.

Intrigued by these quiet accomplishments, veteran filmmaker Peter Mortimer (The Dawn Wall) sets out to make a film about Marc-André.
