Best Conservation Award – Delta Dawn-Lookout Wild Film Festival-2015

Water in the Desert — nothing like it. I just ret Water in the Desert — nothing like it.
I just returned from a soggy and spectacular walkabout inside the Grand Canyon reconnecting with the elements.

What is elemental to me, is that our national parks are one of America’s greatest legacies that everyone can unite around. In a divided world with short attention spans and storms of sound bites, we need our parks more than ever to slow down, seek some silence and once again hug some humility.

Our parks deserve funding and professional staff — not more cuts forcing them to rely on the good will of volunteers.

This place: The Confluence - an open-aired cathedr This place: The Confluence - an open-aired cathedral, is constantly up against people trying to turn its beauty into to cash.

First it was a tram, then dams, now political pressure to ignore the Navajo’s decision to protect the Little Colorado that runs through their own land.

It amazes me how the pressures continue and it is why I continue to talk about it. I’m in Tulsa with @kevinfedarkoauthor talking about the challenges of our parks, water, public lands and the power of native voices.

To learn more more about the issues, and get involved, check out @grandcanyontrust.

Well hello puddy tat. A very rare sighting (my fir Well hello puddy tat. A very rare sighting (my first) of a male mountain lion / cougar about 75 feet up in a tree yesterday.

I’ve often felt the gaze of lions but this time I heard this big fellow long before I saw him. He was making a screeching-type cry, which wildlife biologists have told me is a territorial call.

Such lions are native to Colorado and there are roughly 3800-4400 in the state and an estimated 20,000+ in North America.

To hear more tales of wildlife, I’ll be talking about the importance of wild places and conservation with my old friend @anguskingiii tomorrow at Bowdoin College in Maine (no resident lions there - but there are reports of sightings). To Join us, rsvp at Angus’s page.

Stay tuned for the epic down climb of this kitty…

Backcountry mountain flying in equal parts focus, Backcountry mountain flying in equal parts focus, faith in your aircraft and ability, and complete awe and wonder.

When you take your mother up in the 1978 Super Cub plane that you spent a lifetime flying in with your father, after finally getting your license — it approaches magic.

Thanks for coming up with me “Moutie”. What a memorable joy.
And thanks for instilling the spirit and aerial perspective Pops — and letting me carry on the spirit of your cub.
It is the best camera platform I know.

Lions, bears, wolves… (and elk and bobcat too)… oh Lions, bears, wolves… (and elk and bobcat too)… oh my. What some of my remote cameras have seen this summer trying to document the movements of the recently introduced wolves to Colorado.

What amazes me, is how much other wildlife is out there. I only saw one large mountain lion, but the bears were busy, often trying to eat, lick and chew my cameras (once chomped one good). A bobcat made a brief visit, and the elk are curious and regularly try to chew on the solar cables, but are now skittish with hunting season in full swing. And new keystone predators in the mix.

A pair of coyotes that appeared today — predators that statistically kill livestock than wolves (domesticated dogs take even more), were impressively large.

There is a very wild world out there, often unnoticed in even the many places we hike, bike, and explore. Despite more pressure from corridor disruption and habitat loss, I am glad to know some wildlife call these places I grew up in, home. Nature without wildlife is unnatural.
