I’ve spent much of my adult life documenting fresh water and the drying challenges of my backyard river - The Colorado. In doing so, I often pushed myself to my limits but always found courage and inspiration by teaming up with family and friends.

Writing a personal book about it all - love and loss - and gearing up for it to come out (March 17th) is perhaps scarier than my many thirsty hair raising outings.

Thanks to all at @hierophantpublishing for seeing this through and the scores of people who prodded and pulled me down the path.

For those in Colorado - join me in March @wheeleropera or @alpenglowbookstore or @paoniabooks for fun talks and signings with @acesaspen
In Utah - I’ll do a signing @kingsenglishbookshop after doing a #wasatchdistinguishedspeakerseries 🙏🏼

And lots more coming up.

Thanks @kevinfedarkoauthor and Dr @lennecefer for your water wisdom … and friendship.

On edge— How I felt watching the Olympic hockey th On edge— How I felt watching the Olympic hockey this morning.
Skates off to U.S. Hockey - men’s and women’s gold medal performances. And to Canada. (Love ya - I know you’ll be back).

I grew up in a hockey house. My father played on the U.S. Team in 1961 (post Olympics), coached us and the whole town, my mom led the Mother Puckers and ever since I’ve chased pucks— in college, tournaments all over including the World Pond Hockey Championships in Canada (lost to friends).

I also witnessed the Miracle on Ice moment and the great Mark Johnson (1980 high scorer for that gold medal team which won 46 years ago today) coached me briefly.

I still coach when I can and play and today (beer league), often with my brother and despite rarely winning much over the years, I love the rivalries, camaraderie, teamwork and flow that hockey has brought over the generations and decades.

So great to see that hockey family spirit today. Congrats to all the Olympians who inspire young to old!

Favorite Olympic moment? Many I know - but love to hear.

A few hockey frames from this hockey house and a life on skates.

Pearls of earned hope: I have spent a lot of time Pearls of earned hope: I have spent a lot of time in the Colorado River delta — documenting its challenges but also its promise.
Thanks to the hard work of a few, this delta, that once was forgotten and run dry, has pockets of forests and wetlands and a community of collaborating stewards.
It is what I call earned hope — when hard work and promise link arms.

The Big Straw — sipping a river dry — is one big e The Big Straw — sipping a river dry — is one big event, few know about. People often ask me ‘where we will get the water?’. The Colorado River is facing record low runoff forecasts on the heels of a mega-drought as water managers scramble to find consensus and solutions this year.

Yet roughly 1/3 of the Colorado River flow goes to produce alfalfa for export to Saudi Arabia and China. It proves that water does indeed flow up hill and even over seas to money.
And it comes at the cost of a river, as it the most famous Western river runs dry just below the All American Canal that feeds this use. The irony.

Few realize how much water we ship in the form of forage crops — boatloads — while so many river users struggle to figure out how to use less.

The biggest straw on the river is agriculture — and yes we need to eat — but growing water intensive hay crops to feed livestock on the other side of the world with a limited, decreasing water source — is far from a gold medal water use.

If interested to learn more, check out my new book “Witness to Water” (out next month, link in bio) which details my lifelong journey understanding this most loved and litigated river.
