Relic of the Past?
Water levels in Lake Powell and the West are so low, many predict there may not be enough agua to turn the hydroelectric turbines this summer below this Glen Canyon Dam - shutting off electricity for nearly 6 million and leaving this 726 foot high concrete plug as a reminder of the “dambrian” era.

When the reservoir was full, each year it lost to evaporation the equivalent of Los Angeles’s annual water supply.

As water drops, The maze of canyons upstream are starting to see a return to their historic nature revealing wonders that have been drowned for 70 some years. I’ll be exploring some soon for @smithsonianmagazine stay tuned.

Gliding amidst Gentle Giants.

I recently had the privilege to dive with giant manta rays in the Revillagigedo archipelago, a biosphere reserve known as the “Galapagos of Mexico”. Located some 540 kilometers south of Baja California are four volcanic islands which contains one of the largest aggregations of sharks and manta rays in the world, as well as tuna, humpback whales, and five species of sea turtles.

Mantas are the largest rays in the world and are majestic, highly intelligent and highly threatened species.

Since 1994, six nautical miles around the islands have been protected, creating a natural, vibrant habitat that is a rare model in today’s troubled oceans.

Finned friends: Despite their scary reputations, sharks are remarkable species facing tricky times as oceanic populations have dropped by over 70% since 1970 due to overfishing, bycatches in the tuna industry, shark finning and habitat loss.

When you think of sake, images of a dusty desert town in Arizona probably don't spring immediately to mind. But that is where master brewer Atsuo Sakurai brings his sake production to life, right off of Route 66 with its many dinosaur-themed tourist traps and not far from the vibrant desert landscapes this region of the U.S. is actually known for. I met Atsuo and his family for a @smithsonianmagazine story and got to sample some of his sake, which lives up to its first-grade rating. Thanks to @arizona1stsake for the enormous hospitality. 'Most Endangered River' -- I've spent over a decade documenting my 'backyard' river -- the Colorado — source to sea trying to make more aware how much we collectively ask of this lifeline for the American Southwest. It is one of the most loved and litigated bodies of water in the world and yet it continues to struggle.

@AmericanRivers named the Colorado River the #1 Most Endangered River in the United States today (the second time it has topped this list), highlighting the threat climate change and outdated water management pose to 30 federally-recognized Tribal Nations, seven states, Mexico and the drinking water for 40 million people. Also threatened is vital habitat for wildlife, as the Basin is home to 30 native fish species, two-thirds of which are threatened or endangered, and more than 400 bird species.

I filmed and wrote this short visual poem “I Am Red” (🎥 2,3,4) over a decade ago and it is even more relevant today — there are just more straws sucking from its collective drink. Thx to Amy “Alma del Rio” and @dukebeardsleystudio for your voices.

In my 20-plus years of working in conservation, I've learned that the key to success is collaboration. I'm proud to have been a speaker and long-time partner with @conservationalliance, who recently announced $775,000 in grant awards to 19 groups working to protect wild places across North America.

These grants will go towards projects focused around water, land, forestry, wildlife and more, many in regions I've worked in, including British Columbia, Canada (slides 1 and 2) and the Gila River (slides 3 and 4). I'm glad to see large institutions nominating these projects and supporting conservation efforts. @bankofthewest nominated the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, and their grant will go towards protecting Oregon's Owyhee Canyonlands (slide 5).
